Every season, there are a few key trends that appear in almost every store and are shown in a million varieties. Here are the essentials for Fall/Winter 2005:
Boots: Of course, boots are big every fall, and this year is no exception. Cowboy and western styles are great for casual looks (worn with jeans, cords, denim skirts) and the new flat to-the-knee boots look great with everything. A sleek pair of leather riding boots with skinny jeans tucked into the tops, worn with a lacy, beaded, or embroidered blouse is one of the trendiest silhouettes this year.
Military Jackets: These sharp fitted jackets are more modern than a blazer, and depending on the fit, can add some curves. I love them with jeans or khakis, or try dressing one up with an oxford and a pencil skirt. You could even wear one over a sparkly beaded camisole for an updated evening look.
Lacy Camisoles: An embellished cami will add a feminine to just about anything. I particularly like them under tailored suits - they have a softening effect. They're also great under cardigans. If you're feeling a little brave, try a lacy, embroidered cami underneath an embellished sweater. Just make sure they are of similar weight and coordinating colors - but not too matchy. This look is the most interesting when its an unusual combination, so experiment.
Long beaded necklaces: These are showing up on all of the most fashionable necks right now, mine included. Brightly colored and easily layerable, these are one of fall's most versatile pieces - and they're available in every price range. I like them paired with camis and little velvet or corduroy jackets, basic jeans and tees, or even over a slinky dress for a night out. Try getting one that's a little more substantial, like a bronzey ethnic style, to take this summer's boho look into the fall.
Pencil Skirts: Nothing is more ladylike than a fitted pencil skirt and high heels, and there were many variations on this silhouette on the fall runways. They are perfect for work with a button down or jacket, of course, but they're also excellent with a tank and a cropped jacket or shrug. I love the proportions of this skirt with a shorter top - it will make everyone look taller and thinner.
Of course, fashion isn't just about trends, its about individual style and your own interpretations of each seasons' looks. That said, don't use this report as a shopping list - use it for ideas and inspiration for your own unique looks.
