Yet Another Reason to Like Olivier Theyskens

From the NY Times...

"Zoe and her team almost never buy anything new — they borrow or they are given garments from nearly every designer. Some designers say no. A year ago, Zoe contacted Olivier Theyskens, then the designer of Rochas, about dressing Keira Knightley. He refused. “I was shocked,” she said after ending her phone call. “I honestly could not believe that he wouldn’t want to dress her. He’s a brilliant designer, but he doesn’t understand how the business works.”

Doesn't understand how the business works, or doesn't want to be associated with Zoe's particular brand of overexposed tabloid-pandering glam?

I'm going with the latter.

Eh. I don't understand his attitude, especially since he's had financial problems before. Why not let someone borrow? I wouldn't let them TAKE, but borrow, sure, unless they had a rep for stealing. I don't give gifts (unless you're my friend!) but I do lend.

@wendyb - Borrowing is what stylists do and that's totally normal, but I can see why a designer wouldn't want Rachel Zoe's girls in his stuff. There IS such a thing as bad publicity, especially for a designer who is known for NOT pandering to the media. In regard to the financial problems, he probably feels that it's better to be poor and stay true to yourself than to whore yourself out to the man.

And besides, lending something to a stylist is worlds apart from me or you lending something to a friend.

Trust me, I will happily lend to Rachel Zoe whenever she asks. If I were richer than God, I could afford to put my nose in the air and act like Marc Jacobs and tell the customers how they're beneath me, but I need to make some sales and Rachel sells product! Goodfor Olivier if he's above it all but to me financial problems are no joke. It's okay to be poor but to be out of business is nothing to be so very happy about. I mean, this is all about a commercial transaction ...there's no purpose in having ideas in fashion if no one is ever going to see them. I suppose being sad and misunderstood seems romantic from the outside but not when the bills are pouring in. And what I was saying above (not sure it was clear) is that I DO lend to stylists all the time, but I don't GIVE GIFTS to them or their clients, which bigger companies can afford to do.

@wendyb - I think we just have a difference opinion about Rachel Zoe and the implications of having your name associated with hers - and we're both entitled to that. It's cool.
